Quirkquill

What is it about?
Quirkquill is an original display typeface that serves as a contemporary interpretation of medieval manuscript writing. The project is based on the contrast between the monumental, austere forms of Gothic lettering and the playful, humorous character of ancient marginalia. Visually, the typeface juxtaposes heavy, geometric shapes with soft, dancing gestures and illustrative glyphs. The creative process combined the analysis of archival texts and analogue calligraphic experiments with precise digitization, resulting in a cohesive and modern system of characters.

Why was it created and for whom?
The project emerged as a creative response to the theme “Cycles,” exploring the return of historical styles to contemporary visual culture. It is aimed at designers seeking typefaces that bridge tradition and digital expression. Quirkquill also reflects the designer’s personal design process—from initial sketch to iterative refinement. The goal was to demonstrate that historical forms can gain new life, disappearing and reappearing within shifted aesthetic contexts.
