7th international design conference

We would like the next AGRAFA theme to encourage participants to reflect on the condition of modern design. Increasingly – also in leading academic centres – we observe how the faith in design possibilities is being questioned. Faced with rising conflicts and social divisions, radical attitudes steering towards dictatorship, the systemic exclusion of minorities, aging society, global pandemic or climate change, designers are left feeling helpless. Personalised content in beautifully designed interfaces carries the additional risk of manipulation on an unprecedented scale.  The expectations of making the world a better place exceed the capabilities of designers.

Our thesis is that the only solution is to leave the comfort zone and step onto unknown paths. It is obvious that we should be open to cooperation with experts in other disciplines, acquire new skills, support local communities and civic activism. These are the challenges for a designer in the second decade of the 21st century. The courage to cross boundaries, combined with respect for human beings and for the planet, should become an immanent part of designer’s work
