Description

The goal of the Archair chair project was to revolutionise furniture design and production with a focus on sustainability and local manufacturing. Inspired by global supply chain challenges and rising costs, the author explored a novel curved bending technique that increased the product’s strength while using significantly thinner (0.7 mm) metal sheets. This resulted in the design of a lightweight, easily assembled chair that can be transported as flat sheets, simplifying logistics and distribution. Modern tools like laser cutting and bending facilitated this innovative production process. Metal and wood offered customization options for a diverse audience seeking stylish furniture. Advanced software streamlined design, simulation, and production planning, ensuring quality throughout.

The Archair project’s groundbreaking bending method became the basis for a subsequent bachelor’s thesis: “New methods of shaping sheet steel, using a furniture series as an example,” exploring future applications of this novel technique.
